Welcome! This is my attempt at an Un-official Martha Wainwright Blog. It's been going for a while now and although there was a need to begin with- Since I first started out, Martha's website and Facebook page have lots more info! This is just a back up now really, but hope it is useful :)

a video found on you tube (not by me) of Kate, Rufus and Martha, a radio tribute and transatlantic sessions....

Follow this link to see a video made quite recently at the 'Cedar's Cancer Heroes Night' 11th September 2009, singing Somewhere over the Rainbow

If you are in the UK you might like to listen to the last half an hour of Bob Harris' show, where he puts together a compilation of songs from the McGarrigle/Wainwrights as a tribute to Kate.

I didn't put it here, but the last link reminds me of their being a nice new version of Martha's 'Bleeding All Over You' available as part of the Transatlantic Sessions, Volume 4, which was fairly recently aired on BBC Four. Hopefully the following link will take you to the Amazon Search page- where you will see the DVD (Which has the complete series- Martha sung more than the one song) as well as the CD - on which 'Bleeding All Over You' is on. I have not yet bought this, but I think it would be well worth it as I loved the episodes I saw. Oh and I used the Amazon link as it was easiest, but please try there and elsewhere if you want to buy it!

I want to wish safe travels to Canada for Martha and family.

if you are in the uk, or can listen to BBC Radio....

.... you can look here which is a link to a Radio 4 programme called 'Last Word' which talks about the life of Kate- Emmylou Harris and Martha speak about Kate.... It is available on i-player and the show, which first aired on Friday will be aired again tomorrow (Sunday) night at 20:30. The i player link looks like it will be available forever....

Just checked the Jazz Cafe website and it is now official that her upcoming shows there are cancelled. Here is a link to the page: Jazz Cafe

still so many things about Kate....

.... which really is a testament to her I think- she is being talked about and thought about all over the world....

However, to again pick one out, for those who might wonder where to look.... Here is a really lovely article in The Times: Kate McGarrigle: Tributes from Rufus, Martha and Anna. (Dated tomorrow, so will be in print then I guess....)

On Kate McGarrigle 1946- 2010

There are many words on the web at the moment.

However, these following words are particularly touching (In no particular order):

The Guardian report, in which her doctor speaks.

Rufus Wainwright's words about his mother on his Website

and the words of Kate's sister, Anna and friends on the McGarrigle Website

I feel very sad to have to write this....

However, new is spreading rapidly over the www with the news that Martha's mother, Kate McGarrigle has passed away. Hundreds of tributes on twitter alone and a Telegraph blog entry, which all show the significance of news.

I can only send out my warmest wishes to Martha, and all of Kate's family and closest friends, wherever they may be at this point in time.

I feel very lucky and privileged to have been introduced to her music properly by having seen her play and sing live with her family and friends at the Royal Albert Hall in December 2009.

For anyone who has not yet had the chance to see these, here are a couple of the hi-lights of that night- Click for the links to Prosperina and Wise Men

With love and best wishes... Sarah.

this one just popped up from the News of the World
Somebody on her brother's board posted the link to this which is quite interesting: Wink Ball which has little video interviews of people in the crowd including the piano player. (I had tried to work out where I had seen her before and it was indeed as I last guessed at the Nick Drake Concert.

There is also this bit of news from her Facebook Page:

Feel free to correct me as I may not have read it all properly, but just not sure what Martha's involvement will be as she was in London in December... maybe she recorded it here to be sent over.... but sure we will find out...

however:

brightdome Due to unforeseen circumstances MarthaWainwright not appearing at Songs of Nick Drake, full line up here http://bit.ly/41UvOs

right... lets get started.... Jazz Cafe night one and two continued....

.... so there seem to be all sorts of reviews etc cropping up and am aware that i really need to be in asleep earlier than yesterday, but hey i will see what I can do here before I do that....

firstly, for me this night was even better than last night, and last night was really good, so.... well i guess there was just even more focus and depth to the evening, plus a couple more of my favourite songs and another new one which i love too!!! 'Far Away' was the song that was my first favourite, an instant hit with me and often on repeat when I played the album... and so I was so glad that it was requested, as have been wanting to hear it again since it blew me away at the RFH, the first time I saw Martha live! Also Factory was in the encore. The new song, the one written for the Great Canadian Song Quest is great- Four Black Sheep in the Night- esp with the explanation beforehand....

ok there is a review in the Telegraph (without a photographer there!)

a nice music blog with a review and photos from Anika in London

a piece of uploaded audio L'Accordeoniste

review in The Independent (a bit nicer about the gig than the Telegraph one i think, thought the Telegraph one is also mostly very positive)

ok.... gotta stop there i am afraid- but i am sure there will be more! On image to give a bit of colour to this entry!

quick edit for these photographs of mine and this four black sheep in the night video of mine

now it is really good night!

martha at the jazz cafe 12.01.10 part two

Hi there.... Well snowed in here... so had some time to upload my photos of the evening as well as some videos.... I don't want this blog to be about just my stuff, as I hope is clear, but I will give you a quick link in case you want to have a look at them before more people's are up:

videos so far:

you never phone with loudon

will upload a couple more and sure there will be more and better ones!

also found this one not by me:

L'Accordioniste

Had a brief look at the alerts I mentioned last night, but they all seem to say the same

'Cause time moves in circles and can leave you anywhere'... Martha at the Jazz Cafe first night

...are the lingering words in my mind as well as 'there are no hats, gloves, scarves for the heart' from the final song of the night 'Don't forget', which Martha sung for her mum, saying that it is her mum's favourite song. I can see why, and I know that this is also one of my favourite Martha songs... The small venue was packed and there was definitely an expectant atmosphere. I know that I for one felt very lucky in one sense to be able to see Martha in concert again while her and her family are still here, because of her young baby Arcangelo. Martha was in excellent voice and as always committed and involved in every thing she sung and played. There was a mixture of songs- ones from each album, a new one and a special guest appearance from her father Loudon who sung a couple of songs solo and then they did one together. Martha joked that she would not be singing BMFA that night. Anyway, I am sure someone has a set list and more to report about the show... which I can hopefully either post here or give a link to- as well as videos and more photos of the night. The show included a bit of talk about the baby, naturally. I came home to lots of alerts about the Plastic Ono Band concert in NYC- so I will try and sift through some of those to see if there are any noteworthy ones.... So for now I will say a good night to all!

Fresh off the press: Plastic Ono Band LIVE + special guests

Thanks to Lys for finding this one. The funny thing is there is a small version of this poster flicking through on the flikr martha wainwright photostream I attached to this blog below and I didn't look close enough. See if you can spot it! Guess I'll add it to the Live Dates too....

Jazz Cafe tomorrow night though! Anyone going get ready to comment and review here!

Mildly Martha related...

Pushing the boat out here or whatever the correct phrase is for what I am about to do. (I think pushing the boat out is the phrase to do with money...) But anyway, whatever, I am pushing it a bit to have a link to this article from the Telegraph here. Came through as an alert from yesterday. If you scroll down you will see Martha's name mentioned! A bit like 'Where's Wally?' for Martha fans.....

Could be interesting.... and it is free (but not nec with Martha)

Well, I wonder how many of you reading this are snowed in or nearly snowed in.... it is certainly snowy in London at the moment... Anyway, I found this on the Southbank Centre site- its the guy, Liam Frost who Martha sang the duet with recently.... They had never met before or while doing it so an article said, and so I wonder if they have met yet.... Anyway here is a link to the event at the Southbank Centre

There are a few days worth of events taking place connected to the Cape Farewell Project that Martha took part in last year. I think the events cover various years of people taking part.

From the UCLH Internet...

I think that most of the text is similar to that in another article I have posted on here, but I was kindly sent this link from a fellow fan. Martha's husband Brad is in the picture here too.

Six Tunes on Martha's ipod at the moment...

'On My iPod: Martha Wainwright Martha picks her six track mix from her ipod' in the Metro paper. It's the free paper you get at London Transport Stations when about to take train or a tube somewhere in the morning. So if you are still about to travel you might just have a chance to pick one up, and if not you can be happy like me with the online version. (That you can get to with the above link!)

Happy New Year!

I forgot to say that before :) All the best to everyone! Good luck with your new years resolutions... (If you are making them.)

Interview between Murray Lightburn and Martha Wainwright

Interesting. Not sure when it took place, but the article is dated today.

From www.clashmusic.com: Personality Clash: Murray Lightburn vs. Martha Wainwright

Murray Lightburn (Frontman of 'The Dears') and Martha interview each other about Montreal and more...
